아가(Song of Songs)는 성경 중 가장 짧은 단지 8장(8 Verses)으로 구성되어 있음을 알게 되었습니다.
아가(雅歌)는 그 다른 어떤 장르의 시(詩)보다도 훌륭하다는 솔로몬 왕의 서정적 시가(poetry)이자 가곡으로 심금을 울리는 아름다운 가사가 백미입니다.
아가 1장에 수록된 우리 말 구절 내용은 해석하여 음미하기가 여간 어려운 것이 아닙니다. 그래서 영어 본을 가지고 개인적으로 원문에 충실하게 번역하여 살펴 보고 묵상해 보았습니다.

*젊은 아가씨(Young Woman):
-“Kiss me again and again, for your love is sweeter that wine. (당신의 사랑은 포도주보다 더 달콤하답니다 그러니 당신의 입맞춤을 원합니다.) How fragrant your cologne, and how pleasing your name! (당신에게서 풍겨지는 향기로움이여, 당신의 이름은 또 얼마나 상큼한가!) No wonder all the young women love you! (그러니 모든 젊은 여인네들이 당신을 흠모하고도 남질 않겠어요?) Take me with you. (자, 어서요 저를 취하소서.) Come, let’s run! (오세요, 어서 빨리 함께 서둘러요!) Bring me into your bedroom, O my king. “(나의 왕이시여, 나를 당신의 침소로 이끌어 주세요.)
*예루살렘의 젊은 아가씨들(Young Women of Jerusalem):
- “How happy we are for him! (왕이시여 잘 되셨네요. 우리는 행복하답니다.) We praise his love even more than wine.” (우리는 왕께서 누리시는 사랑을 포도주보다 훨씬 더 찬미한답니다.)
*젊은 아가씨(Young Woman):
-“How right that the young women love you! (그렇고 말고요 젊은 여인네들 모두 흠모해 마지 않는 당신이시여!) I am dark and beautiful, O Women of Jerusalem, tanned as the dark tents of Kedar.
Yes, even as the tents of Solomon! (오 예루살렘의 여인들이여, 난 비록 검지만 아름답답니다 케달의 시커먼 장막 같을찌라도, 그렇죠, 심지어 솔로몬의 텐트장막처럼 말이에요!)
Don’t look down on me, you fair city girls, just because my complexion is so dark. The sun has burned my skin. (도시의 아름다운 여인들이여, 단지 내 얼굴색이 거무스름하다고 멸시하지 말아요. 햇볕이 내 피부를 내리 쬐어 그을린 것뿐이라오.)
My brothers were angry with me and sent me out to tend the vineyards in the hot sun. Now see what it has done to me! (내 오라비들이 나에게 분을 내어 작열하는 태양아래에서 포도원지기 일을 시키려고 나를 밖으로 내 몰았고 그러니 자 그러니 제가 이렇게 검게 그을러 질 수 밖에요!)
“Tell me, O my love, where are you leading your flock today? Where will you rest your sheep at noon? For why should I wander like a prostitute among the flocks of your companions?” (오 내 사랑, 당신의 양떼를 어디로 데려가나요? 정오가 되면 당신의 양들을 어디서 쉬게 할건가요? 내가 당신의 동무들 양떼 무리 사이에서 방황하는 창녀처럼 헤매게 하려는 건가요?)
*젊은 남자(Young Man):
-“If you don’t know, O most beautiful woman, follow the trail of my flock to the shepherds’ tents, and there feed your young goats. (오 어여쁘디 어여쁜 여인아, 당신이 알지 못하겠거든 내 양떼의 발자취를 따라 목자들의 장막 곁으로 찾아 오시게. 그곳에서 당신의 어린 염소들을 먹이고 계시게나.)
What a lovely filly you are, my beloved one! How lovely are your cheeks, with your earrings setting them afire! How stately is your neck, accented with a long string of jewels. (이 얼마나 사랑스러운 매력덩어리 젊은 나의 아가씨인가! 그대의 귀걸이가 어우러져 자기 두 뺨이 마치 타오르는 듯 얼마나 앙증맞은가! 보석으로 길게 치장하여 돋보이는 그대의 목덜미는 그야말로 참 우아하도다.)
We will make earrings of gold for you and beads of silver.” (우린 그대를 위해 금으로 된 귀걸이와 은으로 된 목걸이를 만들려 한다오.)
*젊은 아가씨(Young Woman):
-“The king is lying on his couch, enchanted by the fragrance of my perfume. (왕께서 내향내음에 취하시여 침상에 누워계시네요.) My lover is like a sachet of myrrh lying between my breasts. He is like a bouquet of flowers in the gardens of En-gedi.” (내 사랑 내 낭군은 내 가슴 사이에 놓인 몰약 향낭과도 같고 또 내 낭군은 엔게디 정원에 피어 있는 한 떨기 꽃다발인걸요.)
*젊은 남자(Young Man):
-“How beautiful you are, my beloved, how beautiful! Your eyes are soft like doves.” (어여뻐라, 내사랑, 참 어여쁘도다! 그대의 눈망울은 비둘기처럼 부드럽기도 하구나.)
*젊은 아가씨(Young Woman):
-“What a lovely, pleasant sight you are, my love, as we lie here on the grass, shaded by cedar trees and spreading firs.” (백향목 나무들과 넓게 퍼진 전나무들을 그늘 삼아 싱그러운 풀밭 위에 누워보니 내사랑 내 낭군 당신 모습이 보기만 해도 사랑스럽고 즐거움 그 자체랍니다.)
*젊은 아가씨(Young Woman):
-“I am the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valley.”(난 샤론의 장미/무궁화 꽃이요, 계곡에 핀 백합화랍니다.)
*젊은 남자(Young Man):
-Yes, compared to other women, my beloved is like a lily among thorns.” (그렇고 말고요, 다른 여인들과 비교하자면, 내 사랑 그대는 가시나무들 사이에 핀 백합화<군계일학>이라오.)
*젊은 아가씨(Young Woman):
-“And compared to other youths, my lover is like the finest apple tree in the orchard. I am seated in his delightful shade, and his fruit is delicious to eat. He brings me to the banquet hall, so everyone can see how much he loves me. Oh, feed me with your love-your ‘raisins’ and your ‘apples’-for I am utterly lovesick! His left hand in under my head, and his right hand embraces me. (그리고 내 사랑을 다른 남자들과 비교한다면 내 낭군은 과수원에서 가장 빼어난 사과나무라고나 할까? 난 그이의 쾌적한 그늘에 앉아서 기뻐하며 먹어본 그 실과는 정말 맛나기도 하여라. 그이는 날 연회장으로 데려가서 거기 있는 모든 사람들로 하여금 그이가 날 얼마나 사랑하는지 알 수 있게 하지요. 오, 그대 사랑의 열매인 그대의 건포도와 그대의 사과로 나의 허기를 채워 주시구려, 왜냐하면 난 완전히 그대 사랑의 포로니까요. 그이의 왼손은 내 머리 밑을 감싸고 있으며 오른손으로는 날 품고 있다오.)
Promise me, O women of Jerusalem, by the swift gazelles and the deer of the wild, not to awaken love until the time is right.” (오, 예루살렘의 여인들이여, 빠르게 질주하는 가젤 영양과 들판의 사슴의 마음으로 약속해 주시구려, 때가 차기 전까지는 내 사랑을 흔들어 깨우지 않겠노라고.)
